Overview

From the ancient Indian science of yoga comes the practice of breathing control, known as Pranayama. While there is emphasis on breath control while doing yoga stretches or asanas as they are called, Pranayama can be performed separately as well. This 30-minute session guided by an expert in yoga and Pranayama, is specially designed for children and demonstrates breathing exercises that will particularly help in relaxing them. There is no need to roll out mats or figure out complex postures on this session. Children can easily perform these sitting comfortably on chairs. An ideal session for the current challenging times.

The breathing exercises prescribed in Pranayama are said to awaken your most internal organs and purify energy pathways, thereby balancing the life force within you. Practising Pranayama has been known to reduce respiratory troubles, calm the body and mind and keep stress at bay. In children, the right Pranayama exercises can help improve memory and concentration, relax the body and improve hand-eye coordination. Certain breathing techniques are especially useful in helping hyperactive children relax and calm down. Since mind and body are closely connected by breath, each of them is affected by the other. Teaching children to breathe consciously can positively influence their bodies and minds and bring a sense of joy by stimulating endorphins – those feel-good hormones.

This short session includes basic breathing practices of yoga and is followed by brief meditative relaxation. It can easily be taken from schools or homes and children are bound to benefit from it, with regular practice.
