Sustainable Supply Chains: Chocolate
From cacao pod to chocolate bar — farmers, traders and the economics of fair, deforestation-free cocoa.
Overview
The chocolate industry is worth more than US$130 billion a year — yet many of the farmers who grow cacao live in deep poverty, and cocoa is one of the largest drivers of deforestation in West Africa and Latin America.
In this live session, learners travel from cacao farms in Ghana and Ecuador all the way through to chocolatiers and traders — meeting the people working to make cocoa fair and forest-free.
Students leave understanding how a single product reveals an entire global system — and how their everyday choices connect to it.
What you'll take away
- Trace cacao from farm to bar across two continents
- Understand fair-trade and deforestation-free cocoa
- Meet farmer cooperatives leading the change
- Plan school-level conscious sourcing actions
