Barcelona is a city with over 2000 years of history, heavily influenced by the Mediterranean Sea which dominated a huge part of the Medieval Times. The city has witnessed various historical events and has many a tale to tell. Join us for a tour of the olden parts of Barcelona and learn a little more about its past.
Now called the Gothic Quarter, the old town of Barcelona was restored in the late 19th century when the walls surrounding the city were destroyed. The city got its Gothic face when it was rebuilt in time for the Universal Exhibition, an international fair that took place in Barcelona. The Gothic Quarter is bang in the middle of the old town and is the place where everything in Barcelona began. Our walk through the quaint little town will convince you that the area has its own personality with a strong medieval history and accompanying architecture.
On this tour of the Gothic Quarter, you will get to see some of the Roman heritage in the city. The remains of the ancient Roman wall surrounding the old town now has restored patches depicting each era of reconstruction. The Cathedral of Barcelona was also originally of Romanesque architecture, but the newer façade is Gothic. As we walk along the narrow cobbled streets, we will also pass by the Jewish quarter, where the Jews lived until the horrific 14th century Spanish Inquisition forcing them to be baptized or face death. Today, a dysfunctional Jewish synagogue tells the history of the area through the many archaeological artefacts it has collected. Finally we arrive at a large square – Placa Sant Jaume where the City Hall and the Catalan Regional Government Building stand face to face. As we stand here, we also let you in on the Catalan personality and idiosyncrasy along with some of the legends and stories of the area.
Join this tour to see what the old town of Barcelona looks like, before the influence of Gaudi.
