Overview

Today we will visit the spell-binding Yu Gardens located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City in Shanghai. The garden was completed in 1577 by a government officer of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) – Pan Yunduan. The name of the Gardens was chosen because ‘Yu’ in Chinese translates to ‘pleasing’ and legend has it that it was built for Pan’s parents as a place for them to enjoy a quiet time during their old age.

As we walk through this 16th century garden, you will discover a maze of colourful pavilions, ponds, stone dragons, arching trees, and flowers, surrounding a bridge. It is one of China's finest examples of Ming Dynasty gardens and architecture. The gardens have six scenic areas, five of these being resplendent with impressive rock sculptures, decorative archways and glittering pools all accessed through beautifully designed bridges. The final section of the Gardens is the Yuyuan Bazaar where you would find shops, tea houses, restaurants and traditional souvenirs.

Our expert guide be glad to take you around and let you in on stories from the history of this exquisite garden.

Along with learning about the culture and architecture, children will marvel at all the stupendous architecture amidst this garden.
