Education is key to socio-economic mobility and escaping poverty. According to the UN, over the past decade, major progress was made towards increasing access to education and school enrolment rates, particularly for girls.
As the Covid -19 pandemic spread across the world, most countries announced temporary school closures. By April 2020, nearly 1.6 billion children and youth were out of school. Nearly 369 million children who rely on school meals had to look to other sources for daily nutrition. At no other time have so many children been out of school at the same time, disrupting learning especially for those who are disadvantaged and marginalised. No place is a better reflection of this than Kibera- Africa's largest slum.
In this impactful session, students around the world will be paired with school students in Kenya to discuss ways in which to help disadvantaged children whose learning has been disrupted. Students will discuss tangible ways to help solve the problem in small and big ways. Students can use Globe From Home's Academy that offers free training for disadvantaged youth as one of the tools to help children in Kibera.
This is a unique and impactful session where youngsters will learn to find solutions to real-world problems and imbibe the skills to be true global citizens.
Luke Odhiambo Kagose Luke holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecotourism and has extensive experience in guiding tours in Kibera, which he does with great pride. Originally hailing from Kibera Luke has been active in aid work in the area including being involved with an organization working towards assisting young children in the region gain further education and develop their talents. Having grown up in Kibera, Luke has in-depth understanding of the region and is able to share this with those attending this experience.
Our International Class Exchange sessions are offered free of charge for participating schools. These sessions are designed to accommodate a maximum of 50 students. (Please note that this session is suitable for age groups of 13 and above). When you book the session, please indicate dates that are convenient to you. Globe From Home will then co-ordinate with partner schools in Kenya to arrange the session.
Once the pairing is complete, we send you an email with a link to join session. Participants can log in from their classrooms/ homes on the scheduled dates using the link provided.
Each session requires a teacher from both schools being present as co-hosts along with the Globe From Home team.
