Overview

The Pushkin state museum of Fine Arts is the largest museum of European art in Moscow. The first educational art museum in Russia, the Pushkin art museum was opened to the public in 1912 by its founder Ivan Tsvetavev, a history professor in the Moscow state university. The museum has been built on the lines of great Greco-Roman architectural marvels.

The Pushkin museum is a premier art museum which displays the great works of art from all over Europe. It is a treasure chest of inspiration for art lovers. With captivating artistic spectacles from around the world, the museum is a unique showcase of plaster copies of various modern, medieval and ancient art. Some of the most famous European works of art featured at the museum are displayed in the 19th and the 20th Century art galleries. The museum is also home to the most brilliant privately donated items of art by donors around the world.

Although the museum bears artistic works by artists around the world, the most famous works of art are from the 17th century golden age of Dutch art and the renaissance era paintings by different European artists. Rembrandt is the star of the show. The spoils of the great city of Troy are among the most spectacular and sought-after attractions of the museum. Commonly known as the “Golden items”, the treasure features coins, jewellery, stone axes, bowls and other items found from an excavation site in Turkey which is believed to be the historical city of Troy. The Red Vineyard by Vincent Van Gogh, The Blue Dancers by Edgar Degas, The Ahasuerus and Haman at the feast of Esther by Rembrandt are some of the most famous works of art at the Pushkin Museum.

Whilst the Pushkin museum would traditionally take a whole day to cover, this 60 minute tour will give you an insight into the main pieces.
