If you haven’t visited Madrid because you perceive it to be
not as impressive a capital as many other Western European cities, join us on
this tour and you’ll be taken aback. This Spanish capital has plenty to offer
in terms of history as well as culture. The presenter is a native expert guide
who is keen to show you around the central area of Madrid and offer enticing
stories from Madrid’s history, as well as some Spanish legends.
The tour begins at what was once the entrance to a fortified
city – Puerta del Sol, which roughly translates to the Sun Gate. Find out about
how the place earned its name as we stroll past a unique statue of a bear
standing up against what looks like a strawberry tree, and into the ‘square.’
Look out for age-old landmarks in the square that include the clock tower
especially popular to count down to the New Year, the guitar-wielding sherry
bottle sign of Tio Pepe and La Mallorquina, a 19th century
patisserie that has a very inviting window display of its delectable baked
goodies.
Small groups will enjoy the local folklore that our
presenter shells out as we pass through Arenal Street. He has stories about the
Spanish Tooth Fairy and how a crocodile found its way into a Church, that will
keep you interested as we walk up to the sight of the climax of our tour. As we
approach the end of Arenal Street, we see a large impressive building that is
the Royal Alcazar (Palace) of Madrid. Although it was originally built by the
Arabs in the 8th century, it was left unharmed, and instead extended
by the Christians in the 11th century, who also built the
magnificent Almudena Cathdreal right behind the palace.
When you join this tour, you are bound to be fascinated
by the many stories Madrid has to offer. This small group tour will show people
that there is much more to Madrid beyond the its famous football clubs.
