Overview

A decade of conflict has left Syria in ruins and half of the population has been displaced, making it the world’s largest refugee crisis. The crisis started with the Arab spring protest movements in 2011 that swept much of North Africa and the middle east. Within two years nearly a million Syrian refugees had fled the country while many more had to flee their homes but remain inside the borders as displaced persons. After ten years of conflict, nearly 7 million Syrians have fled the country with nearly the same number now internally displaced. For most Syrians, returning home is a distant dream.

Most Syrian refugees (around 5.6 million) are hosted in neighbouring countries like Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.

Meeting with a refugee is one of the most impactful and profound experiences a student can have, offering them nuanced global awareness and meaningful life lessons. In this unique live, interactive session, students will meet a refugee and learn about the story of their displacement. They will hear a first-hand account of life before the crisis, the journey of migration and the many challenges the refugee faced. They will hear about the undefeated human spirit that keeps the refugees going and how they are trying to create a new life for their families.

This is a one-on-one discussion where students will be able to ask questions and learn about International relations and the need for a seamless, united world with true empathy for others.
