Overview

If you think the city of Venice is only for people who want to be serenaded in a gondola, then this walking tour will certainly surprise you. You’ll be amazed by the wonderfully rich and colourful history of this island city and school students will be excited to hear its fascinating tales. Join us as we walk through the city of Venice and learn about the history of the Queen of the Adriatic, while at the same time practising our Italian speaking skills.

Our tour begins at Piazza San Marco, where a traveler could easily spend a couple of hours marveling at the buildings there. It seems like every structure there has an interesting story to tell, and our presenter will promptly enlighten you with a few of them. The younger audience will particularly enjoy how the relics of St. Mark were stolen from Egypt or how a 500-year old clock still accurately tells the time, month and the phases of the moon. The square is also perfect to learn about architectural styles relevant to different era such as the Byzantine or Gothic styles or those from the Renaissance period.

For those who want to know about life on the islands, we walk through the narrow streets across the square and pass by many homes of the locals. In this pedestrianised city, many houses don’t have streets leading to their entrances. They can only be accessed by boats. As you can imagine, this makes life on the island very difficult, not to mention expensive, resulting in many families moving to the mainland for their livelihood. Regular flooding and the gradual rise of waters also poses grave problems to this city, which are now being addressed by its government.

We now approach Rialto, the hub of merchants and traders of the past, re-developed as the commercial centre of Venice. To end the tour, we would like our young audience to get a mesmerizing view of the Grand Canal and the famed Rialto Bridge. So we take you to one of Venice’s only rooftops (time slot must be reserved prior) located inside an urban shopping mall. On a clear day, along with the blue waters of the canals, you may also see the ice-capped Dolomite mountains in the distance.
