Overview

When talking about tourist highlights from the Arab world, it is impossible not to mention the magnificent Pyramids of Egypt. As part of our series to complement Arabic language learning in schools, this exciting session gives students the opportunity to visit the Pyramids, while at the same time giving them an opportunity to practise their language skills.

For the longest time ever, the Pyramids of Giza have been an iconic landmark for Egypt. And why shouldn’t it be? Achieving this engineering marvel around 4500 years ago, without any of our current technological advancements, was no mean feat! In fact, how the Pyramids were actually built still remains a bit of a mystery. Join our expert from the region, a certified Egyptologist, who takes us on a tour to the Pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza, while mesmerising us with historical stories from Egypt’s illustrious past.

Staunch believers of the afterlife, the Pharaohs saw themselves becoming gods after their death and built tombs for themselves that would hold everything they would need then. Pharaoh Khufu of the 4th dynasty wanted his tomb to stand out from his predecessors and decided to build it away from where theirs stood. And stand out it did, at a towering height of 481 feet. The Khufu (or Cheops) Pyramid was built with nearly 2.3 million blocks of stone each weighing at least 3 tons. It makes you wonder at the number of people and the kind of equipment that would have been used to build this monumental tomb. The other two Pyramids – Khafre and Menkaure were built by his Khufu’s son and grandson at 471 feet and 213 feet respectively.

As our guide keeps you enchanted with historical facts from ancient Egypt, he takes you across to the plateau where you can view all three Pyramids together. And from there, we move onwards to the other iconic landmark of Egypt – the Sphinx. While this mythical creature seems to have origins in ancient Greece, it remains a mystery as to how it was built in Egypt nearly 2000 years before its first mention in Greek mythology! The Egyptian Sphinx has often been overshadowed by the Pyramids and left to fend for weather conditions by itself. It wasn’t until as recently as the 1930s that maintenance of the Sphinx was given any priority.

With so much of history, mystery and architecture, this interactive tour is perfect for Arabic language students.
