Overview

If there is one place that has tremendous historical significance in the country of New Zealand, it is probably Waitangi in the North Island. A treasure trove of both the Maori culture as well as the history of this magnificent island nation, a visit to Waitangi is sure to leave you thoroughly intrigued. In the early 1800s, Maori chieftains felt threatened by the ill-treatment of some British settlers as well as rumours of French invaders. They sought protection from the British Crown and drafted a Declaration of Independence of New Zealand. Yet, the Crown found this unfavourable and decided to colonise the nation. In 1840, more than 300 representatives of the Maoris and Europeans met at James Busby’s residence to discuss the Waitangi Treaty, which was eventually signed on 6th February 1840. Although the interpretation of the Treaty is controversial till today, it is still considered the founding charter of New Zealand. The day is revered as ‘Waitangi Day’ and is a national holiday.

Through this unique 3D session, we take you through the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, to see the splendid park-like lawns and the ‘Whare Runanga’ or the meeting House, which incidentally, also houses a replica of the Treaty. A beautifully carved Maori house as well as the Ngatokimatawhaorua – a Maori war canoe, among the largest in the world are also sights to behold. If you’re looking to learn a thing or two about Maori culture, Waitangi is the perfect place to begin. Te Kongahu Museum within Waitangi Treaty Grounds has won many awards for its interactive exhibits that give you an insight about the Treaty and the country’s diverse history.

How it works

This tour has been designed specially for school children. During this session, students will gain an exclusive insight into the region with splendid 3-D views of the venue. Although conducted different from our regular tours, the session will certainly still be as immersive as all our other sessions.
This is a group tour that accommodates up to 50 children at a time. Once you book this experience, we will send you a confirmation email with a link to join the session. Children and teachers can log in from their individual classes or congregate in one single class/hall and access the tour via the link provided.
